Artefacto at the Netherlands Film Academy: Lecture & Workshop on AI and Documentary (13 & 14 November)

Published on

On 13 and 14 November, the Netherlands Film Academy will welcome filmmakers and researchers Anna Giralt Gris and Dr. Jorge Caballero from Artefacto (Barcelona) for two special events about the future of cinema in the age of AI.

Both events are part of AI Greenhouse, a collaboration between the Netherlands Film Academy and AIxDESIGN, aimed at responsible and creative use of AI in film and film education.

Artefacto is a center in Barcelona where film and technology come together. They conduct research and develop new projects that demonstrate how technology can be used creatively and critically in cinema. Their work has been presented at major festivals such as TIFF, IDFA, SXSW, and CPH:DOX. They collaborate with partners like Runway, Sónar+D, Hugging Face, UPF, and UAB, and maintain a global network of makers and researchers. More info: artefactofilms.com/en

>> Artist Lecture: Cinema Thinking Through Machines

Thursday 13 November | 18:45 – 20:45, Netherlands Film Academy

What happens when cinema learns to think through machines? In this lecture, Giralt Gris and Caballero explore how AI does not merely influence film, but forms a new sensory mode of perception. Through their projects Membrana, Artifacts of War, and 09/05/1982, they show how algorithms and generative models are transforming the making, analyzing, and remembering of films.

The evening ends with a Q&A.

>> Workshop: Documentary Filmmaking in the Age of AI

Friday 14 November | 10:00 – 17:00, Netherlands Film Academy

How do you preserve trust and integrity in documentaries when images and voices are increasingly generated by AI?
In this one-day workshop, organized by film studio Artefacto, participants explore how to work responsibly and transparently with AI tools. Rather than embracing or rejecting technology unthinkingly, you’ll learn how to use AI as a collaborative partner — without compromising your documentary’s credibility.

Through four practical exercises, you will work directly with AI tools to understand how machines see, interpret, and generate. You will develop your own ethical framework and receive guidelines for integrating AI into your creative process in an open and honest manner.

The workshop is intended for documentary filmmakers, students, researchers, and other curious creators. Experience with AI is useful, but not required.

Registration is mandatory — places are limited.
