NFA Research Weekend at the Netherlands Film Academy — Friday 10 and Saturday 11 April 2026
On the evening of Friday 10 April and throughout Saturday 11 April 2026, the Netherlands Film Academy is hosting the second edition of the NFA Research Weekend. During this weekend, teachers, fellows, and others involved in research at the academy will share their processes and (provisional) findings, in formats suited to the nature of their work.
Research at the Film Academy grows out of intrinsic curiosity and a drive to explore in greater depth. The academy's Lectorate supports this practice-based research through initiatives such as the Greenhouses (for Teachers, and Students), the Kenniskring, and various externally funded research projects.
The programme includes, among other things, a book presentation combined with a listening experience in which Eliane Bots explores the concept of "narrative justice". Nduka Mntambo will screen a work-in-progress experimental film about the body as archive and satire as a survival mechanism in the work of South African artist Gamakhulu Diniso. Fellow Juan Palacios will give a lecture performance on geological time and filmmaking from a more-than-human perspective.
On Saturday, a number of workshops will also take place. Anna de Beus and Rosan Boersma focus on mental health within the film industry. Marcel Visbeen leads a conversation about (problematic) definitions of quality, talent, and success, while Reinette van de Stadt invites participants to build an alternative final exam year out of Lego. Kathleen Lotze and Miga Bär take us on a search for future-proof ways of introducing new technology into film and arts education, while Pablo Nunez Palma demonstrates how to use AI to create a personal team of project advisors, and Victorine van Alphen inviting those present to put her model for discussing immersive experiences to the test.
An update on the FilmED research into alternative forms of (film) theory education will also feature during the Research Weekend — including a striking AI application — as will a look into the Stage IX interdisciplinary AHK research into immersive media.
