The Church of Lame

Installation

Reinilde Jonkhout has worked towards a Gesamtkunstwerk which bears the highly suggestive title 'The Church of Lame'. It consists of drawings, video, props and a specially designed soundscape.
With this installation, and through the absurd twists on the reality it presents, Jonkhout questions the ways we are used to seeing women being represented through different media.

"Although I didn’t know it from the beginning, my prime interest was always in the mystified image of the woman. Who is the evil demon seductress staring at us from the screen? The beauty surrounded by fake rocks and waterfalls in a chlorine pool? Through making various works I tried to capture the beauty of the attractive mystified image as well as to make fun of it. The process has been about trying to find what the ideal balance would be of ridicule and attraction."
