Smaragda Nitsopoulou is a sequential visual artist and film director working in Amsterdam and Athens. Through her practice, she is exploring the themes of memory and death in the Anthropocene era. Expanding the use of cinematic language to three-dimensional objects, she comments on social phenomena, visual culture and personal experiences. Using found footage and natural resources for her interactive pieces, she aims to evoke the ecumenical experience of death among the living. She has participated in several international festivals and art fairs such as Documenta 14, Slavonian Biennale, Larnaca Biennale, Video Art Miden & Simultan. She is an active spokesperson for alternative uses of film in education and has produced several teaching scenarios for schools and institutions.
