Okki Poortvliet (Emmen, 1999) is an artist, documentary filmmaker, and designer whose practice moves between anthropology, philosophy, and cinema. Growing up in Odoorn, a small village in the north of the Netherlands, she developed a deep curiosity for the relationship between people, their environments, and the shifting worldviews that shape everyday life. Okki studied Design at Minerva Art Academy and Philosophy at the University of Groningen.
Her films, often presented in extended cinematic forms, are marked by humor and an open gaze. Okki is fascinated by people, their surroundings, and their worldviews. This fascination comes to life in films such as IJswee (2021), about Manus who sharpens ice skates; World's Largest Missile Builder (2022), featuring Jippe who aims to outdo Kim Jong-un; The Flaghoisters (2023), in which Ricardo nails his regional flag to a windmill. In her films she aims to portray remarkable characters in an attentive way, while subtly revealing broader social and ecological issues.
Alongside her film and installation work, Okki creates drawings, posters, and texts. Her work has been presented at locations like Dutch Design Week, het Drents Museum, village halls and canteens. She has received several awards, including the Drentse Talentprijs Cultuur and the Noordster award from International Film Festival Assen. Her latest film installation, Dierendoders (2025) was awarded with the Sybren Hellinga Art Prize.
