We invite you to join our public lecture Mother, I Am Suffocating. This Is My Last Film About You by Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese on the 12th of April at 19:30. RSVP via this link.

Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese is a powerful new voice in cinema. His essay film Mother, I Am Suffocating. This Is My Last Film About You (2019) pulsates with evocative imagery and sounds that offer a world saturated with loss, longing and desire. Mosese mobilises the essay film form to stage a complex and fluid conversation with the figure of the 'mother'. It is in the interlocutory address to this figure that questions of home, nation and exile are put into crisis in ways that are aesthetically sophisticated and politically cogent. The resonating voice of the filmmaker oscillates from being a letter of lament into a love poem, a radical critique that becomes a delicate plea; deliberately resisting a singular register. Mother, I Am Suffocating. This Is My Last Film About You is a self-reflexive experimentation with the cinematic language that bravely collapses the boundaries between the personal and the political.

After the screening Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese will be in conversation with Nduka Mntambo, Head MA of Film programme.

Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese is a filmmaker and visual artist hailing from Hlotse, Leriba, Lesotho. His works are a complex investigation of identity and its amophorous quality in relation to time. Mosese’s art is a layered exploration of the physical cycles of life, death and rebirth in relation to human subjectivity.

Mother, I am Suffocating. This is My Last Film About You, was selected for Final Cut in Venice, winning six awards. Mosese was one of three filmmakers selected for Biennale College Cinema with his second narrative feature film, This Is Not A Burial, It's A Resurrection, which won over 30 awards, including the Jury Award for Visionary Filmmaking at Sundance Film Festival 2020. Mosese's most recent work is a seven-channel video installation entitled Bodies of Negroes: Sculpting God commissioned by Eye museum. And a four channel video installation titled NEW GOD commissioned by Humboldt Forum.
