Cinema is the space of imminence: we experience the human and nonhuman, the complexities and contradictions of the living and dying, and our interconnectedness, always or once again unfolding in the now. Cinema’s imminence proposes, or, we believe it can propose a liveable and viable future.

And a future, if liveable and viable, has to be common-enough. Future has to be collective: we become with each other. Just as subjectivity, ever since Guattari, is collective and specifically relational.

Building upon the creative process behind her recent co-directed work Disturbed Earth (ES, BH, NM/2021/72’) which reflects on present day Srebrenica, Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as on other moving images works, film author and film curator Kumjana Novakova explores possibilities of elaborating subjectivity. Thus, she discusses strategies of creating meaning from the position of filmmaking, and its potentialities as a territory of and for new collectivities.

About Kumjana Novakova
Originally born in Macedonia, Yugoslavia, Kumjana works in the field of film and arts since 2006. She co-founded the Pravo Ljudski Film Festival in Sarajevo (2006), and she was leading the Film Department of the Museum of Contemporary Arts in Skopje (2018–2021).

Currently she is an Associate Professor of Non-Fiction film at ESCAC, Barcelona, and teaches at several film platforms in the region and Europe, while pursuing her PhD in Contemporary Arts and Media in Belgrade. She is continuously researching, exhibiting and publishing in relation to the medium.

As an author, her artistic research lays between cinema and contemporary video art, often exploring how moving images address identities and affinities, memories and the collective self.

Her new feature-length film Disturbed Earth, co-directed with Guillermo Carreras-Candi, premiered at the Documentary Competition of the Sarajevo Film Festival in August, 2021.
