Research Atlas - Bram Loogman, Brigiet van den Berg, Nina Jan

Using the financial support of the Comenius Senior Fellow grant (2018 /2020), a research project was set up by the Lectoraat that resulted in what’s now called the Research Atlas – an active archive of 12 years of research projects undertaken by the student-researchers of the Master of Film ‘Artistic Research in and through Cinema’. The Research Atlas project, which is still ongoing, originated from a desire to research the need for an online platform for the student-researchers of the Master to work, collaborate, share and publish their research. Essential to the method used in this project was the choice – consistent with the ethos of the Master’s programme – to organise the process of development not for (!) the student-researchers but with (!) them; bottom-up rather than top-down. Another determining principle was the desire to design a platform that would be audio-visual. Most platforms are text-driven – using images merely as illustration. The platform envisaged here befits the nature of the research done – namely in and through cinema – and thus is thought through from an audio-visual or cinematic point of view.

The first phase of the project resulted in the Research Atlas: a working prototype of the archive to be used by the current student-researchers as a source of knowledge on research topics and projects undertaken by earlier Master student-researchers. It thus provides references, examples and potential collaborators for current student-researchers. Next phases of the project will focus on the further development of the Atlas platform as a working and publication space.

The researchers working on this Research Atlas project are Bram Loogman, Brigiet van den Berg and Nina Jan.
