Death to the Real! Technology, artistic research and horizons of possibility
Reality in 2022 is perhaps more elusive than ever before. AI generated images, biotechnology and AR/VR techniques have contributed to the dismantling of the structures that used to sustain our definitions of the real. As filmmakers and artists, we have the power to intervene on the meaning-making programs that hold such structures. A call for a Death to the real! appeals precisely to a creative resistance against the imperatives of highly technified media ecologies, governed by private interests of tech and health corporations. Pablo Martínez-Zárate’s proposal is to do so through hybrid, autonomous and radical artistic research strategies.
This lecture shares some methodological insights that have guided the film, installation, interactive and theoretical production of the Mexican filmmaker, artist and scholar over the last decade. Additionally, it condenses some of the main concerns regarding the transformative powers of artistic research, which are guiding Pablo’s research as Artist in Residence at the Netherlands Film Academy during the academic year 22/23.
